Finalmente
As a Latina, first generation student, I’ve tried to represent my family origins through my artwork. I want to show the beautiful aspects of coming from a Mexican heritage, while coming to learn who I am as a person in a pluralistic society. As a minority, I hope to encourage others to embrace where they come as these cultures make us who we are. Currently, some may view immigrants in a negative light, ignoring the beautiful nuances that make us unique. Through my artwork, I want to reflect the pride I have as a Latina woman, and hope to inspire others to celebrate their historical legacies.
For my BFA show, I have painted self-portraits incorporating traditional Mexican symbols. I wear traditional embroidered blouses and skirts that are worn in folkloric dances.
Marigolds are used widely during Day of the Dead festivals, where the living hope to guide their dead ancestors home. I’ve also painted Mexican Poppies which symbolize peace and Chocolate Cosmos flowers representing order. I’ve attempted to blend elements of religious iconography with a contemporary sensibility. Acepta la diversidad.
